Greetings!
This is my thirteenth year at Tamiscal as the College and Career Specialist. My work with junior students is focused on beginning the career and college search (community college and four year schools), testing advice (ACT and SAT), helping with part-time employment and work permits, and answering just about any question that comes up about potential post-high school options. Please encourage your student to stop by my office anytime. If he or she shows absolutely no interest in any of the above yet, that is fairly common. Hopefully, by the end of the year there will be interest in some direction.
The Tamalpais High School District uses the Naviance/Family Connection Program for managing student's high school academic, activities and post-graduation plans. Naviance is a comprehensive website that students can use to help make decisions about courses, colleges and careers. Scholarship information is posted via Family Connection. All students and parents have access to the Tamiscal Family Connection page at:
https://student.naviance.com/tamiscal
You can register for the first time here or revisit the site. For students, the default login is firstname.last name and password is your student ID.
For parents, when you visit the site for the first time, look for the box in the upper right hand corner that asks "are you new here?" and then click on the link below that says "I need to register." Your individualized registration code is: !fc_regcode
Each year I send out emails to students and their parents, compiled from the address on file in the Home Access Center with E-school. Please keep your e-mail address up to date with E-school. Changes can be made by accessing the Home Access Center at https://home.tamdistrict.org/homeaccess/ Choose the student- then click on the Student Information tab -next click on Contact Information.
Tamiscal will be administering the PSAT, free of charge, to Tamiscal Juniors on Wednesday, October 10th starting at 8:30 a.m. All Independent study and Team students must take the PSAT* or have an excused absence from principal Kim Stiffler. The test is approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes long and there is a lengthy registration process that we will do BEFORE the test date in Advisory or Team classroom. We should finish around noon. For information about the PSAT please see https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/inside-the-test
I will be sending out information regarding the college visits at Redwood (Tamiscal students are invited), practice SAT and ACT tests available, along with lots of additional opportunities. This year the PSAT will be given at Tamiscal on October 19th so there is no fee or sign-up needed as in past years. More information on the PSAT will follow.
In a few months, you will receive an invitation to College Night for Junior Students and Parents scheduled for January (exact date TBA) at Tamiscal. After this meeting, I will e-mail Team and Independent Study families about Junior Conferences which Grace Aviles (the student's academic counselor) and I will begin in February. The purpose of this conference is to review student course work and determine the best way to meet the requirements necessary to graduate and either apply to a four-year college, a community college, a certificated program or begin the job search.
I look forward to a fun year and meeting all of you. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
*Because students test free as part of a pilot study with the College Board, no accommodations are offered at the Tamiscal testing site on Wednesday, October 10th. Students with College Board testing accommodations should contact Sarah Eheart for information on locations that will offer accommodations on Saturday, October 13th. 10th graders are also not allowed to test at Tamiscal and they should register with their original home school if they would like to take the PSAT.
