Pride Month Is Here! Celebrate THIS FRIDAY @ lunch by the Senior Tree

It’s time for a refresher on LGBTQIA+ history!

In 1999, June was officially federally recognized as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month by former President Clinton. In 2009 it was later recognized by former President Obama as LGBT Pride Month and again recognized by President Biden in 2021 as LGBTQ Pride Month. But June has been celebrated as Pride Month by members of the LGBTQ+ community since 1970: on the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.

On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall Riots began when the NYPD raided a gay bar, the Stonewall Inn, in Greenwich Village. This violent raid sparked six days of protests and riots in the area. Stonewall resulted in the Gay Rights Movement taking the United States by storm.

Although gay rights have drastically improved since the ‘70s, it’s been a long and trying fight, with gay marriage only being legalized in 2016. Today, students are still regularly called the f-slur in passing, most often by their peers. Allowing ignorance like this to continue without consequence further enables the idea that it’s okay. The f-slur should never be used in a negative way or by people who are not queer.

The f-slur, by definition, used to mean “A bundle of sticks.” This type of bundle of sticks was used as fuel for burning heretics, people who opposed the Catholic Church, in the 1400s. Heretics were forced to gather these sticks to take to the fire that was being built for them.

Heretics who changed their beliefs to avoid being burned had to wear a symbol of the sticks on their sleeves. People began using the f-slur to refer to people who were seen as burdens, such as heretics. It soon became a sexist term then later became a word to emasculate men and demean queer people.

In recent history, there are consistent efforts to censor and demean LGBTQ issues, with laws like the Parental Rights in Education Act, also known as “Don’t Say Gay,” restricting necessary knowledge and discussions from happening. But there is still hope. By being active members of your community you can support queer people by educating yourself and others on the power of hate speech and the importance of queer issues being discussed.

This history lesson was provided by Harper Miller. Thanks  Harper!

April 23rd Earth Day Lunch Celebration -   Come celebrate our society's ongoing love affair with this amazing sphere we call home! To honor Mother Earth, SEA-DISC students will be sharing some of their project work on a variety of topics, ways to get involved in the environmental movement, and some fun Earth-appreciation activities including a tie-dye station! Folks can bring their own garments to tie dye, but we will also have shirts available. Look around for flyers in the halls this week with more info about other activities. In line with Earthday.org, the theme for Earth Day this year is Planet vs. Plastic. Check out their website for more information on that theme, and we look forward to seeing you out on the quad next Tuesday! There will also be a Clothing Swap! You can bring a clothing item to swap or one to donate.

Because of our celebration, there is a modified Bell Schedule April 23rd! You can also find this on the school homepage and school calendar via the school website.

Stealing Is Illegal. Students, we have gotten several concerning phone calls over the past couple of weeks reporting that Archie Willliams’ students are stealing items at lunch from our local community stores. This is both illegal and against school rules. It also is just bad. Please remember that these stores are community businesses. Students caught stealing from businesses during school hours will face legal and school consequences, be banned from the store and will have their off campus privileges revoked. This is not who we are as a school community. We can do better and will do better.

    Tutorial Expectations

Attention all students: During tutorial, you must be in a classroom or directly outside of a classroom, supervised by a teacher.  You are not allowed to be in the student center, on the fields, the Devonshire Quad, the Senior Tree area, etc.  Thank you.

    Special Bell Schedule Next Week

State Testing for Juniors is next week. There will be a special bell schedule for all students on Tuesday and Wednesday. Juniors, thanks for your participation in this important test. Our goal is to be the best in the district with 95% of our students participating. We can do it!

9th and 10th graders will be with their SLC teams on both of these mornings.

Seniors - if you are currently in danger of failing a class, or had a D, F, or Incomplete at R4, you will be required to come into the library Tuesday and Wednesday morning for study hall and will have this as an opportunity to complete missing work so you can finish the year strong! If you are a senior that has C’s or better in all of your classes, you have a late start Tuesday and Wednesday and must be here by 12:30  both days for classes.
Bell Schedule can be found HERE - and on the homepage of the school website.

Attention All Fall and Winter Student Athletes: Please come to the quad/senior tree at the start of the 2nd tutorial today (Wed. March 27) to evaluate your coaches from this past Fall and/or Winter season. BRING A DEVICE!  Attendance is mandatory as we use your feedback to help improve our athletics program. If you can help to pass word to your teammates that would be appreciated.  The survey will only take about 5-10 minutes. Thank you in advance for your time, from the athletics department.

    • The California Scholarship Federation (CSF) membership application for Spring is open!  It closes on February 28th at 4:00 pm.  No late applications are accepted. Applications are submitted online at this link: https://forms.gle/ZwinwexXi3uZu3rQ7. All applicants will receive a copy of their response via email.

“The California Scholarship Federation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to recognize and encourage academic achievement and community service among middle and high school students in California. Eligible students become members by submitting applications based on their report card grades. Membership is for one semester, and membership drives are held each semester within established periods dictated by the State by laws”.

    • The student must apply each semester during the membership drive window and is responsible for tracking their own membership.

    • No late applications are accepted.

    • The membership drives at AWHS happen in January and February using the fall semester grades and then again at the start of a new school year, August/September, using the spring semester grades (spring S2 grades of previous school year).

    • The dates of each drive are posted on the AWHS web  page. The dates are also advertised in Crew Announcements and AWHS Community News.

    • PLEASE note that students are to apply, not their parents. For parents who are tempted to complete the application for the student, it is suggested that you directly supervise your student completing it.

    • The qualifications for CSF semester membership requires the student to apply and have ten CSF points earned on grades from the previous semester.
